Empower Oceanside acknowledges that we are on the unceded traditional territory of the Payómkawichum, who are the first and rightful people of the Western coastal land which was colonized by European settlers and on which Oceanside was developed. Colonization led to genocide, disease, enslavement, stolen land, broken treaties, assimilation, and forced removal of the original peoples to reservations.
In Oceanside and Northern San Diego plus Riverside and Orange County, the Payómkawichum continue to thrive as six different bands of Luiseño Indians:
The reservations of Soboba and Pechanga in Riverside County as well as Pauma, Pala, La Jolla and Rincon in San Diego County are the ancestral lands of our people, and the hope for our future. Collectively, we reference ourselves as the Payomkawichum or Western People.
